Zhang Daqian (1899-1983) is one of the greatest Chinese artists of the 20th century. His masterpiece "Reading Books" was painted in 1945 after he came back from the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang. The original series includes portraits of ladies with Dunhuang painting style and a fusion of female images from the Republic of China period and the Tang Dynasty. The "Reading Books" auctioned is believed to be a printing of Zhang's lover whom he met in North Korea in the 1920s, Chi Chunhong.

作品完成于1945年，当时抗战结束，张大千刚从敦煌石窟临古归来，创作了一系列具有敦煌画风、融合了当时民国时期和唐代女性形象的仕女图。
香港邦瀚斯拍卖行中国古董艺术部专家该系列作品背后的真实原型，依容貌判断，均为张大千于1920年代在朝鲜结识的恋人池春红。
唐冶引述《张大千艺术圈》（中国文联出版社1999年出版）称，1927年，29岁的张大千赴朝鲜观览金刚山，在日本三菱公司举办的宴席上结识平壤伎生（相当于日本的艺妓）池春红，并于三个月的朝夕相处中互生情意。
临走时，张大千希望纳池春红为妾，便与池春红合照一张，寄给二夫人黄凝素。虽二夫人勉强同意，但考虑到来中国后人地生疏、语言不通等，张大千仍将池春红留在了朝鲜，并留下大笔钱财与一部分画作，希望池春红能摆脱艺妓生活，开一间药铺维持生计。
此后六、七年，每年张大千都会到朝鲜与池春红相会，直到1937年抗战爆发，两人就断了联系，而此后池春红于战争中被杀害。1978年，近80岁高龄的张大千应邀到汉城（现首尔）举办画展，期间他亲自到池春红坟前进行悼念。
张大千一生多情，共有四任妻子，不过张大千为池春红留下多首情诗，池春红的形象亦多次出现在张大千的作品中，包括2018年于北京保利以8452.5万元拍卖成交的《天女散花》等。
